DT 2016 proxy Ch. 15 – “The Grand Finale”

(Tommy) We are coming down to the wire race fans! The competition at the 2nd Annual Dragon’s Tail Road Rally has been fierce! Each one of these teams have come to race.

(Smokey) The lead has changed hands several times. Top runners have fallen to the bottom and mid pack contenders have clawed their way up through the competition. Just seconds and fractions of seconds separating each. Aurora how does the field look from above?ch15 1

(Aurora) We have a good view of the front runners now. Jerry Titus in the purple Cheetah of Grand Sport Racing has moved up to join the big boys and there is a four way combat going on. It’s almost too close to call. One tiny slip up will cost someone a spot on the podium.

(Tommy) Almost on cue, After clawing and biting his way up from the 9 spot to at one time the number one spot, Dano mis steers the King Pin curve and allows the Cheetah into the top three.

(Smokey) You can’t be too upset if you’re the Nonesuch Team. Dano ran a good race for them and that Javelin was impressive and seemed to be made for this track. He really cut through the herd to get up front. It just wasn’t meant to be today.

(Aurora) The Scud Missile makes a strong move on Girlieman in the V dub Ghia but the Girlieman Brothers manage to hold off the Asconi attack.ch15 2

(Smokey) They come in 1 – 2 – 3 – 4! Girlieman, Asconi, Titus, Dano

(Tommy) McLovin is still trying to hold off the V dub combo of Herbie and The Junkabilly Buggy to complete the top 5. They are right on his tail.

ch15 3(Smokey) Approaching the finish line, McLovin shouted, “Break Yourself Fool! and pumped his brakes. The driver of the blue Manx Dune buggy fell for the ruse and stopped suddenly, but Herbie’s quick reflexes averted the trap and went around. The Rocket City VW Beetle claims 5th!

(Tommy) Followed by McLovin in the Mustang and Carl Scarborough in the Buggy.ch15 4

(Smokey) Bubba turns in a good last effort, but his struggles with the new car in the middle of the race killed his attempt to defend his crown.

(Aurora) Max Creek continued to improve and his Ghia Jolene seemed to have more power this time around and handled the course well. It was hard for him to get a decent consistent run.ch15 8

(Smokey) The Strummer Racing Beetle limps in. It seems to have lost some power. Could be a valve problem.

(Tommy) Here comes the lavender dart from King Racing. Ted E. Baer struggled the entire race with tire issues. The car seemed to have plenty of power and it’s wide stance handled the twists well despite its higher profile.

(Smokey) And what can we say about Guido DaBritt in the Jagarri? He was all style and class!

(Tommy) Here’s the final board…

2016 DT proxy Ch. 14 – “Over the Humps and Heading for Home”

(Tommy) Race Fans, we have a real battle going on at the 2nd Annual Dragon’s Tail Road Rally!!! We are a little over the halfway mark and no one is ready to roll over yet. We knew this was going to be a combative challenge before we reached the halfway hump and we have not been disappointed.

(Smokey) Hump is right Tommy.  Before we left for the last commercial break we talked about the various trouble spots on the course and the number one technical challenge is without a doubt the Backbone, a series of humps and twists that are starting to take its toll on the drivers and their cars.  Most particularly is the low sitting ’64 Ferrari 330 P4 of Scuderia Ferrari Team.  Driver Asconi struggles to keep his feet on the pedals.

ch14 1(Tommy) You would think that a team that has excelled at a rough course like Sebring wouldn’t have issues with the Backbone.

(Smokey) A rough course is one thing, but these humps are acting like a launch pad for the “Scud Missile”.  Team owner, Tom Bowman was asked what he thought about it and he said,  “Humps are good… on a SuperCross track”.ch14 3

(Aurora) Clearly he is not amused.  Despite the beating to the Ferrari, Asconi manages to stay with the front runners.

(Smokey) Dano is not giving up. He wants this. His Javelin is running smooth and he has the rhythm down…ch14 4

(Tommy) The current leader if you can really call him that is Franz Girlieman in the custom Ghia, but these cars are running so close. The lead keeps going back and forth.  It’s hard to tell who’s the front runner.

(Smokey) Well, to the guys in the stands wearing the “I’m with Girlieman” t- shirts, it is very clear who the leader is!  And you can’t rule out Jerry Titus in the purple Cheetah.  As long as he can keep the engine from overheating which Cheetahs are prone to do, he could continue to impress us with his skills.ch14 2

(Tommy) There are a lot of steady strong running cars mid pack that are also fighting for a spot in the top five.

(Aurora) McLovin is feeling some heat from the Herbie Love Bug.  The red Mustang has picked up some speed as he tries to get away from the Rocket City Beetle and the Junkabilly Dune Buggy is not far behind.ch14 5

(Smokey) Don’t put a fork in Bubba just yet. He’s not done as he turns in his best performance so far in the purple Camaro!

(Tommy) The fuel treatment is finally kicking in for Max Creek in the white ’65 Ghia named Jolene. It’s his best performance too.

(Smokey) Von Wolfenstein puts the ’65 Beetle ch14 6for Strummer Racing into gear trying to get back to the middle of the pack.

(Tommy) Ted E. Baer had gained a little speed before the break but now he seems to be settling back down to a slower pace.  Being the nice guy that he is, he found time to stop for a fan photo.

(Smokey) Guido DaBritt in the Jaggarri is ch14 7enjoying his Sunday stroll through the countryside.

(Tommy) We are in the home stretch folks!!!

Let’s look at the board before we take a short break.

2016 DT Proxy Ch. 13 “A new King of the Hill”

(Tommy) Welcome Back Race Fans! We have had an exciting first two legs of the 2nd Annual Dragon’s Tail Road Rally. When we started the qualifying runs we knew that we were going to have a much more even and faster race than last year’s with just fractions of a second separating each car.

(Smokey) That’s right Tommy, compared to last year, these cars are all very equally matched, the ones trailing are only doing so because their tires are not liking the road surface or they’ve had a few unlucky episodes. There is plenty of speed and they all seem to be handling the twists very well.

(Tommy) Smokey some of the drivers seem to be taming the Backbone better than others. What is the key there?

ch13 1(Smokey) Right again Tommy. For those of you unfamiliar with the Backbone, it is a winding twisting part of the course made up of a series of little hills or humps. If the driver is not careful it is easy to become air born and your landing is not always good to you. Tommy, the keys to the Backbone are momentum, rhythm and coast. Get enough speed, lay off of the gas, put in the clutch and float over the humps.

(Tommy) Aurora has a view of a few of the cars that have really mastered that technique. Thanks Aurora for that shot. What is another problematic spot on this course?

(Smokey) Well Tommy, they don’t call this the Dragon’s Tail for nothing and the Backbone to the tail that sort of whips you around to the main drag is certainly the most challenging, but another trouble spot is up at Castle Mountain and then that sudden drop down to King Pin Curve. There’s a blind spot there and if you are not careful, when you hop down to the foot hills it’s easy to find yourself in a problematic situation.

ch13 2(Tommy) Thanks Smokey. Now let’s check out some more action. Before the last commercial break we saw the Nonesuch Racing Javelin and the Girlieman Ghia steal the lead from Asconi in the maroon Ferrari while he had some issues with his shoes. He seems to have scraped off whatever was troubling him and is now trying to get that lead back. The three leaders are now approaching that tricky area of the drop down from the mountains that Smokey was talking about. Roberto Asconi makes a risky move on the Javelin. Dano tries to counter! They get tangled up in the foothills and Girlieman steers clear and passes them both! Wow! A third lead change! What did we tell you folks?!? These cars are evenly match. It is a battle out there.

from the newly installed dashcam inside the Cheetah

(Aurora) Ah, Tommy. Smokey. It doesn’t look like we are finished yet. That purple Cheetah from Grand Sport Racing has managed to put some distance between it and the red Cornhusker Mustang and now seems to be setting its sights on the big three up front!

(Smokey) Awesome. Yes, the Cheetah has already shown its agility in that crazy maneuver it pulled in order to pass the Mustang. Jerry Titus is not ready to go home yet and he is planning to bring it on. I don’t know if the leading three have been looking in their rear view mirrors but if they did, they would see a blur of purple.ch13 5ch13 4

(Tommy) McLovin in the Cornhusker Racing Mustang has found a new threat. The VW club made up of Herbie from Rocket City Racing and the Junkabilly Dune Buggy are in hot pursuit.

(Aurora) Bubba is out of the trees and back on the course. He is not happy with his attempts to defend his throne but right now he has other things to worry about…

(Smoke) Like that tenacious female “Jolene” the South Shore Racing Ghia. She’s wanting to join up with her V dub brethren and that purple Camaro is the only thing standing in her way.ch13 6

(Tommy) Ted E. Baer in the purple Dart for King Racing turns in his best performance yet. Maybe his tires have dried out.

The Strummer Racing VW Beetle continues to climb back after it’s unfortunate foggy mountain glass experience.

ch13 7(Smokey) In the Jaggarri of Outlaw Hippy Racing, despite his lackluster performance Guido DaBritt looks Great and was heard saying, “Mama Mia, I’m having a Bloody Good time!”

2016 DT proxy Ch. 12 “Battle Stations”

ch12 2 ch12 1ch12 3(Tommy) Welcome back to 2nd Annual Dragon’s Tail Road Rally!  If you are just joining us, there is a little break in the competition as we wait for the sun to dry out the track. Race Officials finally put a halt to the action when the rain started coming down making road conditions unsafe.

(Smokey) Tommy the course might be quiet for the time being, but there is plenty of activity in the pits.  Officials gave the thumbs up to racing teams and will allow them to work on their cars.

(Tommy) That’s good Smokey.  The poor weather was really starting to influence the performance.  It will be interesting to see how each team adapts.

(Smokey) Team Karmann Ghia came well equipped to race.  The Girlieman brothers have decided to swap out the wet tires for some fresh rubber.

ch12 5Dano was pleased with how his Javelin was performing so he is just resting up for the battle ahead.  He was staring daggers at the driver of the maroon Ferrari trying to psych out Roberto Asconi.  The driver for Team Scuderia Ferrari didn’t seem to be bothered by it.  He was last seen walking off towards the Burgerjoint in search of some cornetto… Interesting. As he walked past the grandstands a chant broke out “Scud, Scud, Scud, Scud”.

(Tommy) Scud? I don’t follow…

(Smokey) It took me a while too.  It’s short for Scuderia, as in Scuderia Ferrari.  The crowd has taken to referring to his car as “The Scud Missile”.

ch12 4(Tommy) Ah, I see.  Is he the crowd favorite?

(Smokey) We did take some time and poll the crowd and there is a large camp that is cheering for him, but honestly there seems to be a lot of favorites and at this point it could be anybody’s race and anything could happen.  Look at what happened to the ch12 6Strummer Racing Team for instance. They started out in the top 5 and dropped considerably because of the foggy windshield. Hopefully they were able to reattach the heater hoses to get some of the hot air off of the engine up to the front glass.  There are also some reports that Von Wolfenstein had stepped in something in the Burgerjoint parking lot and his shoes were sticky.ch12 7

(Tommy) When it rains, it pours… What was the commotion in the pits around McLovin from Cornhusker Racing?

(Smokey) The officials were questioning the authenticity of his driver’s license of all things, but he was able to convince them that he was indeed a 25 yr old organ donor from Hawaii as his Driver’s license suggests.

ch12 8(Tommy) Glad we got that cleared up.

(Smokey) South Shore Racing is busy siphoning the bad gas out of Jolene the white Ghia…

(Aurora) Excuse me Smokey, speaking of clearing up… It looks like the weather is starting to clear and officials have given a 10 minute warning.  Looks like there is some scrambling going on in the pits as racers have to get their cars back in order.  Roberto Asconi nearly fell down running back from the restaurant.  He is scheduled first to go out in the “Scud Missile” Ferrari.

(Smokey) Yes, The drivers are getting geared up and the race marshals are releasing the cars in the order that they came in before the rain delay. There’s the green flag!

(Tommy) Looks like the course may still be a little wet in areas. All the cars are now out.

(Aurora) The maroon Ferrari seems to be slowing some in tch12 9he straights.

(Smokey) Yes, Driver Roberto Asconi keeps looking down at his shoes. Perhaps he stepped in something in the parking lot too, sticky shoes.

(Tommy) Dano in the Javelin makes a big move before the turn to Drawbridge Road with the Girlieman Ghia drafting close behind. WOW! Both make a clean pass of the Ferrari!

ch12 10(Aurora) There’s a serious battle going on in the hills between McLovin in the red Mustang and Jerry Titus in the purple Cheetah. McLovin is trying to hold the Cheetah off. They are in the s curves, Titus fakes left and goes right. He ignores the curves and drives straight, leaving the Mustang behind!

(Tommy) Great driving! The shortest distance between points A and B is a straight line and Titus found it!

ch12 11(Smokey) Bubba is trying awfully hard to get to the front but found a puddle and slid into the trees. Help is on the scene but the ground is pretty soft. Herbie and Scarborough in the dune buggy were going to stop to lend a hand but the marshals waved them on.

(Aurora) Max Creek has Jolene running better but there still might be some water in the fuel lines.ch12 12

(Tommy) Ted E. Baer in the Dodge Dart of King Racing is having a fun time hydroplaning. Those tires must be really wet.

Strummer Racing’s VW Bug gets by the Jaggarri because Guido DaBritt was too busy checking out the wet T-shirt contest that just broke out in the stands.

On that note, we’ll take a break for a word from our sponsors.

2016 DT proxy Ch.11 “Cars go out! … Rain moves in.”

(Tommy) We’re back race fans! After an exciting day of qualifying runs, cars are getting ready to go out for the 2nd Annual Dragon’s Tail Road Rally.  Smokey, after all the times were collected the car from Scuderia Ferrari took the top spot.

(Smokey) That’s right Tommy. Owner Tom Bowman must be pleased with how Driver Roberto Asconi put the Ferrari through its paces.

(Tommy) It was a commanding performance that has left a few drivers discouraged.

(Smokey) True Tommy, there were some low hanging heads in the drivers’ clubhouse this morning but this is the Dragon’s Tail people, anything can happen!

The maroon Ferrari is off!

ch111(Aurora) That car is moving effortlessly through the hills. A good steady pace.

(Smokey) Next out of the box is Franz Girlieman in the #31 Ghia. Hans, brother and teammate forced to park his car is now riding shotgun for encouragement. They’re off! Another fine running car. Will they be able to catch the leader?

(Aurora) Guys, the clouds are starting to move in. Rain may hinder the drivers.

(Tommy) We will continue the race until officials decide it is no longer safe. Drivers will need to exercise caution.

ch11(Smokey) We had some really close qualifying times so there will be plenty of door to door racing as the cars are sent out. The candy apple red mustang from Cornhusker Racing goes out followed by the Grand Sport Racing Cheetah. These two are really battling.

(Tommy) The VW bug from Strummer Racing leaves the grid. And the top five are on the course as the rain comes down. Racing officials are waving the next cars forward.

ch112(Smokey) Returning champ Bubba in the metal flake Camaro shoots out then realizes the roads are slippery.

(Aurora) The VW Beetle from Strummer Racing is really having a rough go of it. Looks like his windshield is fogging up and He had to roll the window down to see. Rick Von Wolfenstein is weaving all over the road.  After the stellar performance at the qualifying runs, Owner Harlan Welch-Scarboro will be disappointed.

(Tommy) Fortunately, the next Beetle doesn’t have to worry about driver issues… Herbie from Rocket City Racing handles the rain without problem and moves on.

(Smokey) Driver Carl Scarborough Jr in the convertible Manx Dune Buggy was seen squirting some WD-40 on his goggles to help bead off the rain and manages to hang with Herbie.

ch113(Tommy) Next out is the AMC Javelin for Nonesuch Racing.

(Smokey) This morning at breakfast owner/driver Dano had a pensive determined look on his face. After a strong second place finish last year, he was not pleased with his qualifying run. He’s having a better run in the rain.

ch115(Aurora) Strummer Racing’s V dub continues to weave and is now causing some trouble as the other cars are trying to pass… Wow! the Camaro, Herbie and Manx buggy were hanging back being cautious around the weaving bug, and the Javelin came out of nowhere and made a clean pass on the outside!

ch118(Smokey) Jolene the white VW Ghia with orange stripe from South Shore Racing leaves the line but seems to have gotten some water in the tank. Bursts of power then sluggish performance. Tommy, the rain is starting to play a big part in the performance out there. I look for the officials to call it soon.

ch116(Tommy) Yes, road conditions are starting to deteriorate. The Dodge Dart from King Racing takes off and has some trouble with slippery tires but driver Ted E. Baer manages to get the Grape Deuce around the Strummer Racing Beetle.

Lch114ch117ast out goes the Jagarri from Outlaw Hippy Racing. Driver Guido Da Britt doesn’t seem to mind the rain too much and manages to also go around the struggling bug.

(Aurora) Visibility is getting bad up here and I’m not sure I’m seeing correctly but it looked like while Girlieman in the #31 Ghia was busy holding off the red Mustang and purple Cheetah, the Nonesuch Javelin flew by them. The Javelin seems to have the right tires in the rain!

(Smokey) Well, just as Dano was setting his sights on the Ferrari the officials waved the red flag. Drivers are instructed to return to the pits until conditions improve.

(Tommy) Before we break for some words from our sponsors, Let’s look at the board and see where things stand.

(Tommy Tjet) Welcome Back Race Fans! Earlier today we saw the first five qualifiers make it into the big dance, but we aren’t through yet. We still have some incredible machines coming up! Let’s check in with Smokey down where the action is, Smokey…

ch101(Smokey) Thanks Tommy. Yes we’ve seen some good driving already today and we are not even a third of the way through the field. Franz Girlieman has set the bar pretty high with his 7.522 lap time in the #31 Ghia. Next up is another Karmann Ghia from South Shore Racing in Highman, MA.

(Tommy) Some of you may recognize “Jolene” the white with orange stripe VW Ghia from the first Dragon’s Tail Road Rally. Team Owner Paul Ryer has tweaked and retuned the little car with hopes to improve upon last year’s 5th place finish.

(Smokey) And How! wow, did you see that?! Driver Max Creek must have stomped that pedal through the floor. It has plenty of power. It flew from the start line! How’s it look from above Aurora?

(Aurora) Yes, the South Shore Ghia has way more speed this time around but some handling prowess has suffered. Max is doing all he can but that Ghia hops every time he shifts.  He will have a decent time and hopefully over the course of the race he’ll be able to handle that feisty girl.

ch10vib(Tommy) Whoa! I can hear that all the way up here in the tower. Smokey…

(Smokey) Yes Tommy that growl you hear is some serious American metal. King Racing from Latrobe, PA has put everything they got into this fuchsia 69 Dodge Dart. Team Owner Jeff King has been pretty quiet about the power plant behind this thing. 440 V8? who knows… I do know it’s vibrating my insides. There it goes. It’s plenty fast!

(Tommy) Fast is not always first on the Dragon’s Tail.

(Smokey) True. very true.

ch103(Tommy) Next up we have a sleek mid engine machine from Scuderia Ferrari Racing Team.   This 67 Ferrari 330 P4 beauty is from Owner Tom Bowman stables in Virginia Beach, VA. There was a little trouble with the car. Smokey do you have the story?

(Smokey) Yes Tommy, during free practice the car was performing poorly or unpredictably. It seemed that the Ferrari was too low to the ground and would drag here and there. The Team’s crew pumped a little more air into the tires and it was just enough to raise it.

(Aurora) There it goes. Driver Roberto Asconi is making it look real easy!

(Smokey) We have a new Fastest Lap!!! and The crowd is going wild down here. Simply Amazing.

(Tommy) That was an amazing run. The other teams are going to be looking for ways to let the air out of those tires. Rolling up to the line is a gorgeous specimen from Rocket City Racing centered out of Madison, Alabama.

ch104(Smokey) This 1963 Cobra is fresh off a win at Riverside and great things are expected from it today. Instead of Dave MacDonald, Rocket City has placed Dan Turnkey behind the wheel. There it goes.

(Aurora) The blue and white cobra seems to be handling pretty well but the sun is lower in the sky and the shadow and light play seems to be giving the driver some trouble when he comes out of the over pass.

(Smokey) Ah, here’s a first at the Dragon’s Tail… The second car from Rocket City Racing seems to be driving itself!

ch105(Tommy) Come again Smokey. Did I hear you correctly???

(Smokey) That’s right Tommy. This charming little 63 VW Bug just took off without a driver.

(Aurora) I don’t know how that is possible, but from up here it looks like that #53 VW bug is making some good time, with or without a driver.

ch106(Tommy) At the line we have a 65 Candy Apple Red Ford Mustang 2+2. Cornhusker Racing transported 2 cars to the Dragon’s Tail, but one was found to be in violation of the rules and was DQ’d. So Team Owner Mark Boesen has had to put all his eggs into one basket. Let’s hope driver McLoving can deliver.

(Smokey) Nice Run Tommy! There were times when that car was air born, Reminiscent of last year’s winner. It will be interesting to see where he is on the board.

ch107(Tommy) We are getting down to the last couple of teams for qualifying. Next up is Strummer Racing. A relative newcomer, Team Owner Harlan Welch-Scarboro had a hard time acquiring sponsorship. He had to nickel and dime his way here selling advertising rights to every inch of his cars’ surface.

(Smokey) First off is a tan hot rod coup. It runs pretty decent through the course but has some handling issues. Followed by a VW Bug. Yep just checking. This one has a driver.ch108

(Tommy) Driver indeed! Rick Von Wolfenstein is really taking that beetle on a trip.

Last team up is Junkabilly Racing. Carl Scarborough is behind the wheel of a 65 Meyers Manx.

ch109(Smokey) Using the same chassis of his former 3rd place winning custom Ghia, Team Owner Scott Scarboro has replaced the body with this fiberglass dune buggy. We shall see if it’s a mistake.

(Tommy) Junkabilly Racing has some friends in the local VW/Buggy club and many of them have come out to show their support.

ch1010(Smokey) Tommy, I’m down here with the last driver of the day, Crafty Dick Kraft who’s about to go out in a chopped up beetle that he’s calling a Rat Rod. Why is that Dick?

(Crafty Dick Craft) Well when we dug the body up at the junkyard, all these rats ran out of the rotten seat cushions. So why not? Any ways before I take off in this bucket of rust I just wanted to say thanks to everybody for tuning in. It’s been a good day of racing and the fans and sponsors have been so supportive.   Ok, I’m off!

(Tommy) I couldn’t have said it better myself! But before we sign off, let’s look at the leader board.

2016 DT Proxy ch. 9 “Wheels are turning!!!”

qual(Tommy T-jet) Greetings Race Fans, Tommy T-jet here! Aurora is up in the air and Smokey is down on the ground. We’ll be taking over coverage of the 2nd Annual Dragon’s Tail Road Rally. Smokey, earlier this morning a drivers meeting was held. Any idea what that was about?

(Smokey) Well Tommy, another news source claimed that there was some trash talk going on between Rocket City Racing and Grand Sport Racing. Something about the graphic work on the Grand Sport Cheetah. So we thought that maybe this meeting was to calm everyone down, but these guys seem to be nothing but professional. This meeting was just simply to get everyone together to go over the rules for clarification.

qual2(Tommy)While the road crew does one more pass over the course, Smokey tell us what was touched on at the meeting.

(Smokey) Due to the extreme cold temperatures up here in the hills, each car will be allowed 2 minutes to warm up instead of the original 1 minute that was stated in the official rule book. After that, each car has time to adjust tire pressure, check gauges and tweak anything before their qualifying run.

All cars will make a 2 minute qualifying run. The car with the fastest lap from each team will move forward to the race. One car teams automatically qualify but will still have to make a qualifying run. During the race the cars will be sent out in the order of their qualifying times.

qual3(Tommy) Thanks Smokey. Looks like the track is ready and officials are calling for the first car. Up first, a pair of beauties from Karmann Ghia Racing stationed out of Stedman, NC. Hans Girlieman is behind the wheel of the two tone lt. blue and white #11. This team is new to the DT Road Rally.

(Smokey) Tommy, the air cooled cars are going to love this weather and the rear engine over the wheels should help with extra grip and handling…

And he’s off!!!

(Tommy)From up here in the tower it looks like that is an even running machine. Handling well and moving smoothly through the twists. Girlieman seems to be a little cautious. Maybe he’s not quite awake yet, but he should be pleased with this run.

(Smokey)Looks like we will have a little brotherly competition going on here folks! Next out of the gate is Franz Girlieman in the #31 VW Ghia.

(Tommy) Wow! Franz is not holding back! Like a hot knife through butter he’s making it look too easy.

(Smokey)Did you see that?!? He just thumbed his nose at his brother as he passed the pit area! The crowd is going wild down here. What a show!

(Tommy) Next up is another first timer to the Dragon’s Tail, team Outlaw Hippy Racing, also from NC?

qual4(Smokey) That’s right Tommy. Highpoint, NC. Guido DaBritt will be driving an unusual European hybrid, a Jagarri. Similar to Clemente Biondetti’s F1 car a few years back, looks like owner Sal Matthews combined the best bits of a Jaguar and Ferrari…   ooops.

(Tommy) What happened down there Smokey?!

(Smokey) Seems that first time driver DaBritt got a little nervous. or was it too much oil and garlic pasta with his tea and crumpets? either way he slipped the car into reverse and took out the head race marshal.

That was close. The marshal seems to be ok. Well Guido gets the green, grinds it into gear and gets off.

(Tommy) The Jagarri seems to be struggling a bit. Guido must have been shaken by the accident and is stressed to find the gears.

(Smokey) At the line is team mate Joe “the Roller” Bonez in a bright red Chaparral MKll. Not much is known about him but some of the drivers mentioned his questionable morals. Did something happen at the ceremonial dinner banquet last night? Aurora? you’ve been quiet today…qual5

(Aurora) Ah, no comment… But I have a good view of Mr. Bonez as he approaches the Backbone. Let’s just hope he performs better today than he did last night… looks like it’s about the same. The Chappy seems to be lacking any power.

(Tommy) Owner Dan “Dano” Cocke returns to the Dragon’s Tail after taking 2nd place last year. He has a new racing team, Nonesuch Racing and he is looking to take the top spot this year. Dano will be driving a ’68 Javelin and team mate Shorty Kowalski will pilot a ’67 Pontiac Firebird.

(Smokey) Looking at these fine machines, it’s hard to believe that they were saved from the crusher at a scrap yard in Nonesuch Kentucky. Here they are now brought back to life. I have a feeling that they are going to run as well as they look.qual6

(Tommy) Dan-o noticed some trouble with oil pressure during warm up, but now he seems to be moving comfortably through the course. Look at him slide into that turn! Nice run!

(Smokey)Off goes Shorty. Yes both of these cars are good runners. Their times will be close.

qual7(Aurora)We’ve been having a little difficulty up here in the copter, but I managed to snap a couple of shots of the Firebird. He’s really having some fun out there!

(Tommy)Grand Sport Racing returns to the Dragon’s Tail following a 4th place finish last year. Some of you might recognize this Cheetah from the motion picture, “Spin Out” starring Elvis. Jerry Titus is behind the wheel. Let’s hope he does better than he did at Riverside where he crashed at the end of the 1st lap.

qual8(Smokey) The Purple Cheetah is off. It doesn’t seem to have a lot of speed, but handles like a champ.

(Tommy) Maybe it’s handling those turns so effortlessly that it looks slow. The clock will let us know.  Titus is discussing his time now with the head marshal.

qual9(Smokey) Next up, the returning champ, Bubba behind the wheel of another Purple Camaro. Team Purple owner, William Milholen from Carrollton VA built this new beast with hopes of enlisting Mark Martin to drive, but it looks like that plan didn’t work out. It shouldn’t be an issue as Bubba did a fine job last year. As long as he steers clear of the burger stand he should have a good run. Pictures won’t do this car justice, it sparkles in the morning sun.

There he goes!!! A purple blur. I think He has more but perhaps he’s holding back and saving it for the race!

(Tommy) Let’s take a look at the leaderboard…  (X moves forward)

qual12(Smokey) That’s some close times. Next on deck we have some veteran car builders but new to the Dragon’s Tail. Also a couple of returning teams looking for another chance to try and tame the Dragon.

(Tommy) And now a word from our Sponsors!

2016 DT Proxy Ch.8 – “Busy Day at the Track”

1checkinOnce the trailers and transporters rolled in, the cars were carefully unloaded and then led to the garage for tech.  Race officials went over this year’s entries with a fine tooth comb looking for any infractions.  There were plenty of creative interpretations of the gray areas of the car build rules but only one car was found to be a clear case for Disqualification.  The sleek Mako Shark of Cornhusker Racing tried to slip by inspection but was discovered to be equipped with illegal tires.

After all the registrations and assessments, 12 teams with 18 cars made the cut to participate in the 2nd Annual Dragon’s Tail Road Rally. The group is made up of a mix bag of machines from American metal, European hybrids and California fiberglass. Team owners represent 8 different states and feature DTRR returning participants and first timers!

Here is the official 2016 DTRR Race Roster

Advance Ticket holders of 2016 DTRR (Facebook) were privy to a raffle which will be decided later today. One lucky spectator will get to take home their very own Squash Bug from DTRR sponsor HOSlotCarz.com.

20160215_221909 20160215_221921Aurora reported for duty today and went up in the Bell copter to captured a few shots. After a brief drivers meeting the cars will report to the grid for establishing qualifying times.

2016 DT Proxy Ch. 7 “Drama on the Drawbridge and All the Sponsors are in!”

proxy20161There’s already a little drama playing out on the course and the race hasn’t even started yet. It seems that late last night someone contacted local law enforcement with complaints of a group of rabble-rousers racing through the foot hills and Castle Rock. Sheriff Knottinham was able to catch up to the rogues on Drawbridge Road. It turned out to be members of the Junkabilly Racing Team sneaking in some test tuning on the driving course. Dragon’s Tail Road Rally race officials were on the scene and deemed the situation a violation of race protocol giving the local team an unfair advantage. Junkabilly Racing has been penalized. They will be allowed to participate in the race but they will be excluded from occupying any podium positions. With such an anticipated pool of talent expected to show up this year, we shall see if the penalty has any affect on the outcome of the race.

proxy20162proxy20163This year race organizers obtained the proper permits and received permission from town officials to erect sponsorship billboards along the race course. A work crew was busy this morning installing the signage along Backbone Road when two tractor trailers eased their way around the perilous turns. BRP and Bubba’s Race Car Shells, the last of the Sponsors bearing prizes have arrived! Rumor has it that both are also sponsoring race teams in this year’s race.

There seem to be some movement in the newly constructed pit areas as race officials continue to prepare for the arrival of more car transporters over the next couple of days. We are also anticipating the return of Tommy Tjet, Smokey and Aurora to help cover the racing excitement.  Stay tuned as things are starting to gear up!
